अरब सागर और फोर्ट कोच्चि का समद्र तट

कुदरत के रंगों के साथ बदलता रहता है हमारी जिंदगी का हर लम्हा

            इक पल की पलक पर है ठहरी हुई ये दुनिया,

            इस पल के झपकने तक हर खेल सुहाना है,

            संसार की हर शय का बस इतना ही फसाना है , 

            इक धुंध से आना है इक धुंध में जाना है।

            इन्सान समझता है वो इल्म का सागर है,

            उसने अभी दुनिया की एक बूंद को जाना है,

         यह जिंदगी कुदरत के रंगों के साथ बदलती रहती है। हमें इन रंगों के साथ ही अपनी जिंदगी को रंगना होता है। अपने दिल के दरवाजे खोले रखने पड़ते हैं-स्वीकार के लिए। हालात से तालमेल बैठाना होता है। फिर चीजें अपने आप होने लगती हैं। सहज और स्वाभाविक रूप में। आज ऐसा ही हुआ था कोच्चि की सुबह के साथ। बीती रात कोच्चि में काफी पानी बरसा था। उम्मीद कम ही थी कि अगले दिन मौसम खुलेगा। केरल में मानसूनी बारिश के बारे में कुछ कहा नहीं जा सकता। हम बारिश में ही कोच्चि जैसे ऐतिहासिक नगर को घूमने का प्लान तैयार कर चुके थे। लेकिन, सुबह हमारी जब आंख खुली तो आसमान साफ था। ठंडी हवा बह रही थी। हमारे लिए मौका था फोर्ट कोच्चि समुद्र तट पर मॉर्निंग वॉक करने का। आज मार्निंग वॉक पर शायराना मूड था। साहिर लुधियानवी की शायरी के हम मुरीद हैं। उनकी शायरी जिंदगी की हकीकत को बयां करती है। दीन-दुनिया के प्रति हमें एक आइना दिखाती है। उनके दो शेर मुझे याद आ रहे थे। -

हजार बर्क गिरें, लाख आंधियां  उठें,

वो फूल खिल के रहेंगे, जो खिलने वाले हैं

देखा है जिंदगी को कुछ इतने करीब से, 

चेहरे तमाम लगने लगे हैं अजीब से।

        सुबह के पांच बजे थे। दिन था-05 जुलाई 2024। कोच्चि की सड़कों पर सन्नाटा था। हमारे घर से समुद्र तट करीब एक किलोमीटर दूर था। पैदल ही समुद्र तट की तरफ बढ़ गए थे। वैसे भी कोच्चि को पैदल घूमने में ही मजा है। हम वास्को डि गामा स्कवायर होते हुए  समुद्र तट के वाकिंग ट्रैक पर पहुंच गए थे। दिन निकल रहा था। सागर की लहरें ऊषा का अभिनंदन कर रही थीं। मंद-मंद बहती हवा मन को सुकून दे रही थी। सागर की उत्ताल तरंगें उल्लास पैदा कर रही थीं। जिंदगी के प्रति उल्लास। हर जाता हुआ पल आने वाले कल की नई कहानी लिख जाता है। यहां कुछ उधार नहीं रहता। कुदरत सब बराबर कर देती है। 

“अरब सागर की रानी” का खिताब

        मालवाहक बड़े-बड़े समुद्री जहाजों की आवाजाही यहां के व्यापारिक महत्व को समझा रही थी। व्यापारिक महत्व के कारण ही कोच्चि को “अरब सागर की रानी” का खिताब भी मिला है। 1503 में पुर्तगाली साम्राज्य यहां स्थापित हुआ था। औपनिवेशिक भारत में कोच्चि पहला यूरोपीय उपनिवेशों में से एक था। जमाना चाहें कितना ही बदल गया हो, पर कोच्चि में काम करने के तौर-तरीके आज भी परंपराओं का लिबास ओढ़े हुए हैं।  

मछुआरों का श्रम और संघर्ष

        श्रम और संघर्ष की गाथा आज हम कोच्चि के समुद्र तट पर देख रहे थे। सुबह-सुबह मछुआरों के ग्रुप समुद्र में हलचल मचा रहे थे। ये अपनी-अपनी नावों पर सवार थे। कभी-कभी नावें काफी दूर चली जाती थीं। फिर एक नाव से डमरू की ध्वनि गुंजायमान होती थी। कुछ ही देर में सब नावें एक साथ। ग्रुप के लोग करीब दस नावों पर थे। जाल में फंसी मछलियों जब नाव में उड़ेला जाता था, तब मछुआरे खुशी के गीत गाते थे। उनकी अपनी भाषा थी। उन्हें देखकर लगता है कि ये खुशी के साथ कारोबार करने की एक कहानी भी है जो उनमें हौसला बनाए रखती है। वे जल्दी हारते नहीं, बल्कि वे सब्र और संघर्ष से अपनी रोजी-रोटी की इबारत लिखते हैं। मछुआरों के लिए समय के बहुत मायने हैं। सुबह चार बजे तक उन्हें समुद्र में उतरना होता है-अपनी नावों के साथ। वे जाल डालते है और इंतजार करते हैं-मछलियों का। मौसमी बदलाव इनके लिए बहुत ज्यादा मायने नहीं रखते, बशर्ते तूफान, चक्रवात, सुनामी या बहुत तेज बारिश की चेतावनियां जारी न हुई हों। 

तट को आकर्षक बनाते हैं चीनी फिशिंग नेट

        कोच्चि के समुद्र तट पर ही सुबह-सुबह सी-फूड का थोक और रिटेल मार्केट लगता है। सुबह-सुबह यहां अच्छी भीड़ होती है। समुद्र तट पर मछली पकड़ने के पुराने और नए दोनों साधन मौजूद हैं। सबसे ज्यादा प्रचलित है-चीन के जाल और उसकी तकनीक से मछली पकड़ने का तरीका। इसे चीनी फिशिंग नेट भी कहा जाता है। चीनी फिशिंग नेट का कोच्चि में पहली बार चीनी यात्री ज़्हेंग हे ने प्रयोग किया था। पहली बार ये जाल चौदहवीं शताब्दी में कोच्चि बंदरगाह में स्थापित किए गए और तब से इनका उपयोग किया जा रहा है। व्येपीन द्वीप और फोर्ट कोच्चि के समुद्र तटों पर चीनी फिशिंग नेट देखे जा सकते हैं। इस जाल की विशेषता इस तथ्य में है कि इन्हें मध्य हवा में झूले की तरह छोड़ा जा सकता है। ये जाल खंभों से लटके होते हैं जो बाँस या सागौन की लकड़ी से बनाए जाते हैं। ये कोच्चि के तटीय परिदृश्य में एक अनूठा आकर्षण जोड़ते हैं। उधर, वाइपन समुद्र तट से करीब दो किलोमीटर की दूरी पर फिश मॉल है। यहां सी-फूड के अलावा मछलियों और समुद्री जीव-जंतुओं की की अनेक प्रजातियों का बाजार लगता है। बेशक, सी-फूड यहां के जनजीवन का हिस्सा है, पर ऐसा भी नहीं कि शाकाहार के लिए कोई जगह ही न हो। अच्छे शुद्ध शाकाहारी होटल और रेस्टोरेंट भी यहां हैं, जिनमें अनंता भवन, रसा होटल और आर्य होटल आदि प्रमुख हैं। दक्षिण भारत के व्यंजन और जायके, दोनों का अद्भुत मेल हमने यहां पाया। 

 खूबसूरत “OISSA CAFE” 

सुबह के आठ बजे चुके थे। हरा-नीला अरब सागर सूरज की सुनहरी किरणों से दमक रहा था। छोटे समुद्री जहाज, स्टीमर, नावें और फेरी जहाजों को सागर पर तैरता देख उत्साहित होना स्वाभाविक था। जल परिवहन यहां के लिए एक लाइफ लाइन की तरह काम करता है। अब हमारे ब्रेक फास्ट का समय हो चुका था। वाटर मेट्रो रेलवे स्टेशन के पास ही खूबसूरत होटल है-The Fort Manor Hotal। इसी होटल के “OISSA CAFE” में हमारा ब्रेकफास्ट था। यह एक अच्छा कैफे है। हालांकि इसके आसपास भी बेहतरीन होटल, रेस्टोरेंट और कैफे हैं। पर, केरल की परंपरागत कला-संस्कृति को यह बखूबी निभाता है। शाम के समय यहां रौनक ज्यादा रहती है। जब हम होटल पहुंचे थे, तब वहां मलयालम फिल्म की शूटिंग चल रही थी। लाइव शूटिंग देखने का यह पहला मौका था। यहां के कलाकारों में कुदरती अभिनय समाया हुआ है। डायरेक्टर को रि-टेक के मौके वे कम ही देते हैं। कला  और संस्कृति से समृद्ध इस क्षेत्र की दीवारों पर उकेरी गई मनमोहक पेंटिग्स दिल को छू लेती हैं। लगता है कि कुदरत ही कलाकारों के जरिए खुद को अभिव्यक्त कर रही हो।

 चूंकि आज हमें वाटर मेट्रो के सफर पर निकलना था, इसलिए जल्दी तैयार हुए। इस होटल के पास में ही फोर्ट कोच्चि का वाटर मेट्रो स्टेशन है। एक द्वीप से दूसरे द्वीप पर जाने के लिए हमारे पास दो ही विकल्प होते हैं। एक-फेरी यानि छोटा जहाज और दूसरा वाटर मेट्रो। छोटे जहाज में बस, कार, जीप, ट्रक, बाइक और लोग सब एक साथ आ जाते हैं। ये फेरी फोर्ट कोच्चि से वाइपन द्वीप तक चलती है। यहीं पर वाइपन वाटर मेट्रो स्टेशन है जो हमें कोच्चि के अन्य द्वीपों के अलावा अर्नाकुलम शहर से भी जोड़ता है। यहीं पर केरल का हाई कोर्ट भी है। 

 

वॉटर मेट्रो और समुद्र तटीय देशों जैसी आवो-हवा

        हमारा पहला सफर छोटे जहाज से हुआ और दूसरा वाटर मेट्रो से। हम फेरी से वाइपन वाटर मेट्रो तक पहुंचे। वाइपन वाटर मेट्रो से हाईकोर्ट मेट्रो तक पहुंचे। वाटर मेट्रो हमें अपने देश में समुद्र तटीय देशों जैसी आवो-हवा का एहसास करा रही थी। मेट्रो में करीब 50 लोगों के बैठने की जगह थी। हम करीब 20 मिनट में हाईकोर्ट वाटर मेट्रो स्टेशन पहुंच गए थे। यह वाटर मेट्रो का बड़ा स्टेशन है। स्टेशन के पास ही बेहद खूबसूरत समुद्र तट है। इसे  अत्याधुनिक साज-सज्जा से मनोरम बनाया गया है। शांत वातावरण में यह एक ऐसी जगह है जहां से कहीं और जाने का मन नहीं करता। सौ मीटर की दूरी पर ही फूड कोर्ट है। खाने के शौकीन लोगों के लिए शानदार जगह। मसालों की खुशबू और समुद्र तटीय व्यंजन एहसास कराते हैं कि आप केरल में हैं। 

अर्नाकुलम की शहरी दुनिया

        फूड कोर्ट पार करते ही एक शहरी दुनिया शुरू आ जाती है। यह अर्नाकुलम शहर है। चौड़ी सड़कों पर तेज दौड़ती कारें, बसें और मोटर बाइक्स मैदानी शहरी जीवन का एहसास कराती हैं। इस सुंदर शहर में पढ़ने-लिखने का बेमिसाल माहौल है। करीब दो घंटे तक हमने इस शहर में बच्चों को पढ़ाई-लिखाई से जुड़े हुए ही देखा। हर चौराहे पर सबसे ज्यादा भीड़ स्कूल-कॉलेजों के स्टूडेंट्स की दिखती थी। सभ्य और शालीन वेशभूषा। चमक-दमक के आकर्षण से दूर। ये स्टूडेंट्स अपने स्कूल-कालेज जाने के लिए सिटी बसों का ही प्रयोग करते हैं। स्कूटी-बाइक से स्कूल-कालेज जाने का चलन यहां देशके अन्य मेट्रो शहरों के मुकाबले बहुत कम है। खान-पान काफी सस्ता है। शहर के प्रमुख इलाके रेल मेट्रो से जुड़े हैं और कई इलाके रेल मेट्रो से जुड़ने जा रहे हैं। फोर्ट कोच्चि और अर्नाकुलम को मिलाकर यह बहुत बड़ा शहर बन जाता है। 

लूलू कोच्चि के आगे दिल्ली-मुंबई के मॉल भी पीछे

        शहर में एक ही सबसे बड़ा माल है। लूलू मॉल। यहां आने वाली भीड़ को देख हम चकरा ही गए थे। खरीदार ऐसे उमड़ रहे थे-जैसे सब कुछ फ्री में मिल रहा हो। यह मेरे जीवन का पहला अनुभव था, जहां मैंने ब्रांडेड महंगे स्मार्ट टीवी हों या फिर दुनिया की महंगी ब्रांडेड घड़ियां। इन्हें ग्राहकों की भीड़ लगी थी। ब्रांडेड कपड़े हों या फिर फुटवियर, या फिर जो भी आप सोच सकते हैं-सब कुछ था यहां पर। एक-एक बिलिंग काउंटर पर सैकड़ों लोगों की लंबी-लंबी लाइनें देखने लायक थी। दिल्ली का एम्बीएंस मॉल हो या बेंगलुरू का फोरम मॉल या फिर मुंबई का फिनिक्स पैलेडियम मॉल, ये मॉल खूबसूरत और बड़े तो बहुत हैं लेकिन वहां कभी हमने ग्राहकों की ऐसी भीड़ नहीं देखी। बहरहाल, लूलू मॉल में ग्राहकों का सैलाव यहां के लोगों की शौकीन जीवन शैली को परिलक्षित कर रहा था। अरब देशों से कारोबार और वहां नौकरी के अवसर, दोनों ही चीजें इस शहर को आर्थिक मजबूती देती हैं।

Arabian Sea and Fort Kochi beach

Every moment of our life changes with the colours of nature

            This life keeps changing with the colours of nature. We have to colour our lives with these colours. We have to keep the doors of our hearts open for acceptance. We have to adjust to the situation. Then things start happening on their own. In a simple and natural way. The same thing happened today with the morning of Kochi. Last night it rained a lot in Kochi. There was little hope that the weather would clear the next day. Nothing can be said about monsoon rain in Kerala. We had already made a plan to visit a historical city like Kochi in the rain. But, when we opened our eyes in the morning, the sky was clear. Cold wind was blowing. It was an opportunity for us to take a morning walk on the Fort Kochi beach.

Title of “Queen of Arabian Sea”

                It was five in the morning. The day was- 05 July 2024. There was silence on the streets of Kochi. The beach was about a kilometer away from our house. We headed towards the beach on foot. Anyway, the fun is in roaming around Kochi on foot. We reached the walking track of the beach via Vasco da Gama Square. The day was breaking. The waves of the sea were welcoming the dawn. The gently blowing wind was soothing the mind. The movement of large cargo ships was making one understand the commercial importance of this place. Due to commercial importance, Kochi has also got the title of “Queen of the Arabian Sea”. The Portuguese Empire was established here in 1503. Kochi was one of the first European colonies in colonial India. And, today it has become the economic capital of Kerala.

Fishermen's labor and struggle

            Today we were witnessing the saga of labor and struggle on the beach of Kochi. Early in the morning, groups of fishermen were creating a stir in the sea. They were riding on their respective boats. Sometimes the boats went quite far. Then the sound of a drum resounded from one boat. In a short while, all the boats came together. There were about ten people in the group on the boats. When the fish caught in the net were thrown into the boat, the fishermen sang songs of joy. They had their own language. Looking at them, it seems that this is also a story of doing business with joy, which keeps their courage alive. They do not give up easily, rather they write the story of their livelihood with patience and struggle. Time is very important for fishermen. They have to go to the sea by four in the morning - with their boats. They cast the net and wait for the fish. Weather changes do not matter much to them, provided there are no warnings of storm, cyclone, tsunami or very heavy rain.

Chinese fishing nets make the beach attractive

        A wholesale and retail market of sea food is set up on the beach of Kochi in the morning. There is a good crowd here in the morning. Both old and new means of fishing are present on the beach. The most popular is the method of fishing with Chinese nets and its technology. It is also called Chinese fishing net. Chinese fishing nets were first used in Kochi by the Chinese traveler Zheng He. These nets were first installed in Kochi port in the fourteenth century and have been in use since then. Chinese fishing nets can be seen on the beaches of Vypeen Island and Fort Kochi. The specialty of these nets lies in the fact that they can be left in mid-air like a swing. These nets hang from pillars which are made of bamboo or teak wood. They add a unique charm to the coastal landscape of Kochi. On the other hand, there is a fish mall at a distance of about two kilometers from Vypeen beach. Apart from sea food, there is a market of many species of fish and sea creatures here. Of course, sea food is a part of the life here, but it is not that there is no place for vegetarianism. There are also good pure vegetarian hotels and restaurants here, prominent among which are Ananta Bhavan, Rasa Hotel and Arya Hotel. We found a wonderful combination of both the cuisine and flavours of South India here.

Beautiful “OISSA CAFE”

            It was already 8 am. The green-blue Arabian Sea was glowing with the golden rays of the sun. It was natural to get excited seeing small ships, steamers, boats and ferry ships floating on the sea. Water transport works like a lifeline here. Now it was time for our breakfast. There is a beautiful hotel near the Water Metro Railway Station - The Fort Manor Hotel. We had breakfast in the “OISSA CAFE” of this hotel. This is a good cafe. Although there are excellent hotels, restaurants and cafes around it too. But, it maintains the traditional art and culture of Kerala very well. There is more activity here in the evening. When we reached the hotel, the shooting of a Malayalam film was going on there. This was the first time to see live shooting. The artists here have natural acting skills. They rarely give the director a chance for re-takes. The beautiful paintings on the walls of this region, rich in art and culture, touch the heart. It seems as if nature is expressing itself through the artists.

        Since we had to go on a water metro journey today, we got ready early. The water metro station of Fort Kochi is near this hotel. We have only two options to go from one island to another. One is ferry, that is, a small ship and the other is water metro. Buses, cars, jeeps, trucks, bikes and people all come together in a small ship. This ferry runs from Fort Kochi to Vypan Island. Here is the Vypan Water Metro Station which connects us to other islands of Kochi as well as Ernakulam city. Kerala High Court is also located here.

Water Metro and climate like coastal countries

            Our first journey was by a small ship and the second by water metro. We reached Vypan Water Metro by ferry. We reached High Court Metro from Vypan Water Metro. Water Metro was making us feel the climate like coastal countries in our country. The metro had seating capacity for about 50 people. We reached High Court Water Metro Station in about 20 minutes. This is a big station of water metro. There is a very beautiful beach near the station. It has been made picturesque with ultra-modern decorations. In a peaceful environment, this is such a place from where one does not feel like going anywhere else. There is a food court at a distance of a hundred meters. A great place for food lovers. The aroma of spices and coastal cuisine make you feel that you are in Kerala.

Urban world of Ernakulam

            An urban world begins as soon as you cross the food court. This is the city of Ernakulam. Fast moving cars, buses and motorbikes on the wide roads give the feeling of urban life in the plains. This beautiful city has an unmatched environment for education. For about two hours, we saw children in this city engaged in education. The maximum crowd at every intersection was of school and college students. Decent and decent attire. Away from the attraction of glitz and glamour. These students use city buses to go to their schools and colleges. The trend of going to school and college on scooty-bike is very less here as compared to other metro cities of the country. Food and drink is quite cheap. Major areas of the city are connected by rail metro and many areas are going to be connected by rail metro. Fort Kochi and Ernakulam together make this a very big city.

Even the malls of Delhi and Mumbai are behind Lulu Kochi

            There is only one biggest mall in the city. Lulu Mall. We were stunned to see the crowd coming here. Buyers were flocking in as if they were getting everything for free. This was the first experience of my life where there was a rush of customers for branded expensive smart TVs or the world's most expensive branded watches. Be it branded clothes or footwear, or whatever you can think of - everything was available here. Long queues of hundreds of people at each billing counter were worth seeing. Whether it is Ambience Mall of Delhi or Forum Mall of Bangalore or Phoenix Palladium Mall of Mumbai, these malls are very beautiful and big but we have never seen such a rush of customers there. Anyway, the rush of customers at Lulu Mall was reflecting the fond lifestyle of the people here. Business from Arab countries and job opportunities there, both things give economic strength to this city.
